The Wicker Stitch is a decorative needlepoint stitch that creates a woven texture, much like the look of a wicker basket. It's perfect when you want to add structure, rhythm, and a cozy, rustic touch to your canvas.

Where and Why to Use It

  • Great for backgrounds,

  • Realistic for basket designs, textiles, or furniture

  • Anywhere you want a neat, geometric texture

How to Stitch the Wicker Stitch

  1. Start in the outer left corner of the area you want to fill.

  2. Work a block of three vertical stitches:

    • Bring your needle up and go down over 4 canvas threads (across 3 canvas holes).

    • Repeat this two more times, each stitch right next to the last.

  3. Now work a block of three horizontal stitches:

    • Bring your needle up, go across 4 canvas threads horizontally (over 3 canvas holes).

    • Repeat this two more times, forming a neat horizontal block.

    • Continue alternating vertical and horizontal blocks of 3 stitches across the row until you reach the desired width.

  4. On the next row, shift the pattern:

    • Place horizontal blocks underneath the previous row’s vertical ones, and vertical blocks under the horizontal ones.

  5. Repeat to fill the entire area.

Where the Name Comes From

The stitch gets its name from its visual similarity to wicker weaving — with alternating short and long stitches forming a structured, basket-like texture.
