If you’ve explored the world of needlepoint or embroidery threads, you’ve likely come across pearl cotton—a smooth, twisted thread with a soft shine and a slightly raised texture. It’s loved by many stitchers for its ease of use and decorative finish.

What Is Pearl Cotton?

Pearl cotton (or cotton perlé) is a non-divisible, mercerised cotton thread, giving it that signature shine and strength. Fibers are twisted together into a round, slightly glossy thread that cannot be separated into strands like classic stranded embroidery floss. Because of the way pearl cotton is twisted, it gives a more textured finish than stranded cotton floss. It has a slightly rope-like appearance.

It’s available in multiple thicknesses—called sizes—which you’ll want to match to your canvas for best results.

While "pearl cotton" technically refers to a specific structure of thread - the name often changes when the fiber content changes. If it´s made of Silk it is usually called Silk Pearl (Soie Perlé), if it´s made up of mixed fibers the name varies by brand – you might find names like Rayon perlé, viscose silk pearl or Blended pearl threads.

Sizes & Coverage Guide

Pearl cotton comes in numbered sizes—the smaller the number, the thicker the thread. Choosing the right size depends on your canvas count:

Pearl Cotton Size

Needlepoint Canvas Size

10–12ct

12–14ct

16–18ct

Embroidery or 18+ ct

Tip: Always test a small section if you’re unsure which size will give you the coverage and look you want.

Why Stitchers love Pearl Cotton

  • No need to separate strands

  • Smooth stitching with little to no fraying

  • Slight sheen gives a polished look

  • Strong and durable

  • Great for textured effects or raised stitches

Final Thoughts

Pearl cotton is a classic for a reason. Its twisted structure, subtle shine, and satisfying stitch feel make it a favorite in many needlepoint and embroidery projects. While we don’t include it in our kits at Maison Needlepoint, it’s a fantastic option to explore as you grow your stitching skills.
