Needlepoint Yarns: Tapestry Wool

Tapestry wool has been used in needlepoint for generations. It’s thick, strong, and easy to work with on low-count canvases (those with bigger holes, like 10 or 12 mesh). While it's not part of our Maison Needlepoint kits—which are designed for a lighter, more contemporary finish—tapestry wool remains an option worth exploring for certain types of projects.

What is tapestry wool?

Tapestry wool is a non-divisible, 100% wool thread created specifically for use on canvas. It’s thicker than other threads like stranded cotton or silk, giving full coverage on canvases with larger mesh sizes (10 or 12 mesh). It has a soft but slightly textured feel and typically comes in a matte finish.

The look and feel

There’s something undeniably traditional about tapestry wool. It brings weight and warmth to a design—but it also leans toward a more heritage-style aesthetic. For those who prefer a modern, lighter finish or more vibrant colour definition, other thread types like stranded cotton or silk might be more suitable.

At Maison Needlepoint, we’ve chosen to work with colourfast stranded cotton in our kits instead off Tapestry wool because it offers a more refined texture, brighter colour payoff, and versatility across a range of mesh sizes. It also pairs beautifully with decorative stitches, which can get lost in the thickness of wool.

Why Stitchers love Tapestry Wool

Tapestry wool is best used when you’re stitching on low-count canvas and want a dense, sturdy result. Projects that call for wool often include:

  • Used on low-count canvas so great for quick stitching

  • Suitable for beginners

  • High coverage

  • Durable, so great for functional items

  • Fuzzy texture with matte finish

Final Thoughts

If you’re working on a low-count canvas and want a more traditional look—or if you’re finishing a project that needs to be extra durable, like a seat cushion—then tapestry wool is an option worth considering. Just be aware that it will influence the overall look and feel of your project, giving it a heavier and more textured appearance.

It’s not a thread we use in our kits, but it’s part of the broader needlepoint world and can be a good fit for specific creative goals.
